Head of Group, EU Negotiations

Role Summary:

Based at our London office, the CBI EU Negotiations Team leads the organisation’s high-profile work on Brexit. The team coordinates the whole organisation’s activity on the EU negotiations, designs policy solutions to complex Brexit challenges, supports CBI members and engages with political stakeholders in the UK, Europe and internationally.  

Reporting into the Deputy Director-General for Policy and Campaigns, the Head of Group will be responsible for ensuring the CBI continues to shape the Brexit debate in the UK and across Europe on behalf of its members.

The ultimate goal is for the organisation to play a leading role in making a success of Brexit on behalf of its members, building an economy which provides prosperity for all. 

This role involves managing a high-performing team of 6 people, including direct line-management responsibility for 4 people.

Key Responsibilities:

Identifying opportunities from Brexit and designing policy solutions to complex Brexit challenges:

  • Working with the team to find solutions to specific Brexit policy challenges where the CBI can add value
  • Coordinating the organisation’s policy work on Brexit across a wide range of issues to ensure a consistent overall approach
  • Helping to identify economic opportunities from Brexit
  • Playing a key role to devise the CBI’s ongoing messaging around Brexit

Supporting CBI members, engaging with stakeholders and representing the CBI externally:

  • Helping CBI members to cut through the noise of the Brexit debate
  • Assisting members to prepare their businesses for any changes as a result of Brexit
  • Influencing government officials, politicians and other stakeholders
  • Representing the CBI on external platforms and, as appropriate, in the media
  • Position the CBI as a leading voice in the wider debate on Brexit
  • Engage with the business community through other business organisations and trade association to retain, as far as possible, as a united business voice in the debate

Managing a high-performing team:

  • Managing the workflow and output of the CBI EU Negotiations Team (6 people in total)
  • Line managing 4 team members directly
  • Developing team members to achieve their full potential
  • Being part of the leadership team for the CBI Campaigns Directorate
  • Providing a link between the team and the organisation’s senior management, including Director-General and President

Knowledge & Experience

What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements


  • Experienced at influencing government in the UK at all levels and has detailed understanding of working of Westminster and Whitehall
  • Knowledge of interplay between Brussels institutions and the EU policymaking process
  • Experienced people manager, with proven track record of developing a high-performing team
  • Awareness of political dynamics in UK, especially around Brexit
  • Understanding of business impacts of Brexit and potential opportunities
  • Comfortable engaging with and managing senior internal and external stakeholders, in both business and government 


  • Detailed knowledge of key Brexit policy issues like customs union and regulatory equivalence
  • Experience of representing a high-profile organisation externally in a pressured environment
  • Network of contacts in the UK, both in government and business
  • Interest in and awareness of political dynamics across Europe and experience engaging with stakeholders in EU Member States
  • Track record of writing for different audiences, from long policy reports to impactful press releases
  • Experience of running successful campaigns
  • Commercial experience of recruiting and retaining clients, and seeking new sources of revenue
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK and Europe
