The CBI policy and Campaigns team develops a market leading range of policy ideas and interventions. Historically, these have had a national focus. Increasingly, there is a need to apply these locally, whether in devolved nations or across regions. The CBI has improved our approach in this area but – not least because of devolution and industrial strategy – there is a need to deliver local support now, and build a more effective strategy for the future.
Reporting into the Deputy Director General of Policy and Campaigns, the Head of Regional Policy will own and drive our vital work in this area, developing the immediate plan for how we identify local policy priorities, alongside a long-term strategy for how we improve our regional policy approach.
Developing a motivated, effective team
- Effectively leading a team of two policy professionals.
- Setting direction for individual members of the team, and investing time in ensuring effective professional development for team members.
- Using supportive challenge to encourage member-focus, innovation and high quality in all the team’s work.
- Contributing to the success of the wider CBI through the leadership group of our policy team.
- Ensuring effective collaboration with CBI policy teams in the devolved nations and English regions on regional issues.
Delivering our industrial strategy consultation
- Building on Government’s Industrial Strategy White Paper, the CBI has a plan to engage members locally and facilitate local industrial strategies
- Working with commercial, you will help shape this plan to ensure that it delivers real local insight, using the insight from CBI’s unlocking regional growth analysis, including local scorecards, as a starting point
Developing our regional policy strategy
- The CBI is clear that we need a long term vision for regional policy. CBI’s regional offices should be vocal champions for local priorities, have a point of view on devolution and relationships with key stakeholders
- Your role will be to develop this thinking into a clear strategy with objectives, KPIs and resource requirements
- You will need to work closely with the commercial team, policy colleagues and members to understand the regions and ensure the plan has buy-in from across the organisation.
Delivering our strategy
- Once the strategy is complete, the expectation is that you would lead delivery
- Naturally, the nature of this will depend on the final plan and will be owned jointly with the regions but will be likely to involve the development of a central hub, taking policy thinking from Cannon Place and ensuring that regions can use this and ‘translate’ it locally
Knowledge & Experience
What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Understanding of major trends in and drivers of the UK and international policy & political landscape – and appreciation of how they impact upon the CBI
- Experience of working in a political environment
- Understanding of the policy development process and broad knowledge of the CBI’s policy priorities
- Knowledge of a range of modern campaigning & lobbying tools & techniques
- Expertise in the UK parliamentary system, including regional and local devolution
- Knowledge of policymaking in the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish devolved administrations
- Experience of developing and executing a high level regional political, communication, and campaign strategies
- Experience managing budgets and external suppliers
- Experience managing a high-performing team
- Media experience, including awareness of how to secure high profile coverage through national, regional, and specialist media
