CBI Chinese New Year Dinner

On Wednesday 22 February, the CBI celebrated the year of the Dog at the 2018 CBI Chinese New Year Dinner, in partnership with Huawei.

The event was attended by over 200 business leaders and speeches were given by CBI Director-General, Carolyn Fairbairn, the Rt. Hon. Matt Hancock MP, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and His Excellency Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Speaking at the annual event which brings together senior business and political leaders from across the Sino-British community, Carolyn spoke about how the UK can and should enjoy growing trade with old and new partners alike. She went on to point out that despite Brexit requiring tough choices, choosing who the UK trades with does not have to be one of them. As well as speaking about her recent trip to China with the Prime Minister, Carolyn emphasised the great partnership between the UK and China.

Following Carolyn, His Excellency Liu Xiaoming also spoke about UK China partnership before the new Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport told the story of UK tech success and how that fits well with Chinese success and global trade. As home to some of the fastest developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) firms in the world, he said the UK is determined to be one of the leading places in the world for AI, sharing that with China, and urging the need to cooperate on an ever-wider range of issues.

The CBI wishes everyone a prosperous year of the Dog and looks forward to continuing its work on UK China relations in the coming year.
