CBI continues good engagement while MPs miss their usual February recess
Last week, CBI’s Chief UK Policy Director, Matthew Fell attended the Department for Education’s Business Representative Organisation meeting with Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, and Education Minister, Anne Milton. The focus of the meeting was on further reforms of the apprenticeship levy, where ministers were perhaps more open and engaged on reform ideas than previously. Other items discussed included broader reforms to vocational education including the introduction of T-levels and ensuring a splash around apprenticeship week.
Also last week, CBI Deputy Director General, Josh Hardie, met with Chi Onwurah, Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science & Innovation, to discuss Brexit and Labour policy on R&D tax credit as well as Labour’s Industrial Strategy. During the meeting Josh highlighted the CBI regional no deal analysis as well the CBI’s R&D investment work.

Elsewhere, Oliver Dowden, Minister for Implementation gave a speech at the CBI on Public Contracting announcing the publication of the government's Outsourcing Playbook. During Mr Dowden’s speech he highlighted how the Playbook, had been developed jointly by government and industry in the wake of the collapse of Carillion. He went on to explain how it lays out seven new initiatives to help change the relationship between government and its suppliers, including welcome steps to more collaboratively manage risk, greater certainty about upcoming commercial opportunities, and a commitment to ensure that commissioners look beyond price when selecting private sector partners.

Finally, CBI’s East of England Director, Richard Tunnicliffe and CBI Regional Senior Policy Adviser, James Sloan, met with James Palmer, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, to discuss regional infrastructure and understand more about local spending priorities for the combined authority.
